Looking at the image my guess is that its supose to be positive. I get this because of the focus and were the focus is located, on the bow, this being a very feminen part of our culture and the fact that it is the sharpest and closest makes me feel very cute i guess. So the physical postcard is representational and the one on the web is still representational because it a photograph but it is now mechanical because it is being viewed over the interwebs. because of the noise, the croping and focus, it is almost to hard to understand what the image is I only really understand it cause i have previous knowledge of the subject matter.

You are right that it is supposed to be a positive image. I wanted to show the beauty of the different textures in the materials that were used in the construction of the hat. I used subtle highlighting on the bow as well as shallow depth of field to create an attractive focal point for the viewer. I thought that the satin reflected light in a slightly more attractive way than the velvet did, thus another reason to focus on the bow. Using depth of field also allows for a play between the hard sculpted bow and the soft velvet edges of the cap itself because there is a natural exaggeration that then occurs from the soft, out of focus appearance. I photographed the cap from a slightly downward angle then cropped it very close to make the viewer still feel like they are in control, but also that they can be intimate with the object itself.
